Why is my waste disposal leaking?

Your waste disposal can make life in your kitchen much easier, allowing you quickly dispose of some food waste in your sink. However, there is always a chance that it could start to leak. Read on to find out more about why your waste disposal could be leaking so you can take steps to put it right.

Reason 1: A loose sink flange

Your sink flange connects your waste disposal to your sink drain. If the connection between the flange or the sink isn’t as strong as it once was, this could be the cause of your leak. Take a look at your mounting bolts to make sure they are fastened as tightly as they need to be. You may also need to replace the plumber’s putty that’s sealing up your disposal.

Reason 2: Drain line connection

Dishwasher drain pipes are often linked to waste disposal units. The job of the drainpipe is to send excess food and waste into the waste disposal. A leakage could be the result of a loose metal clamp. However, you may be able to tighten it back up again with a screwdriver. Take a look at the hose too. If there are any cracks or hardened areas in the hose that links your dishwasher to your waste disposal, this could be the cause of your problem. You will need to replace your hose if this is the case.

Reason 3: A broken internal seal

If you have had your waste disposal unit for some time, it may be worn. Internal seals often wear out over several years. You may well have a busted internal seal if the disposal is leaking from the bottom. You may need to replace your whole unit if you see cracks in your disposal. If your disposal appears to have moved over time, you may be able to put it back in place before resealing it.
