Preventative maintenance tips for your commercial or domestic heating system

One of the best ways to stop dirt and air from accumulating inside your commercial or domestic heating system is to carry out preventative maintenance. Today’s heating systems are incredibly dependent upon clean water quality. It’s essential to have a clean water supply to keep systems and components like boilers, heat pumps, cylinders and fan coils efficient.

Overcome central heating problems

Studies suggest that around 80% of all central heating system problems are linked to sludge or debris inside the systems. This is why it’s so important to not only clean out your systems regularly but to take preventative action too. Air and dirt can cause big problems inside your heating system. Air can cause pipes to become noisy and can also result in circulation blocks and low flow rates. It can also make the transfer of heat into your space less efficient. This means your rooms could become much colder than required, and you may also find yourself spending more on heating. Air is also linked to system corrosion and therefore the breakdown of pipes, radiators and boiler heat exchangers.

One of the most effective ways to reduce the amount of air that’s inside a system is to fit valves which will automatically vent air when it’s accumulating in a riser. You can also fit standard and automatic air vents inside your radiators. Automatic valves ensure that air build-ups are managed continually rather than once a year when your system is inspected, or when it breaks down. There are various solutions on the market which ensure air is vented continuously.

Issues with older systems

Some older systems have filters and strainers inside them. These can remove larger particles of debris. However, smaller particles including rust and fine sand may not be trapped. This can result in the loss of water pressure. Most strainers need to be removed and cleaned regularly, but modern dirt separators can exploit gravity to ensure even the smallest particles are removed from your system. This can prevent or minimise operating pressure loss. Some separators even have triple dirt and air separation abilities.
