Sunday pipes down with Glastonbury’s sound

Blocked pipes

Today has been quite something in the pipes of plumbing. While listening to Paul Mc Cartney’s ‘pipes of peace’ on the radio, at the same time trying to reconfigure 22mm copper pipes in an airing cupboard due to a blocked cold feed pipe from a feed and expansion tank.

This job was a challenging one, to say the least, and so it’s quite soothing right now as the Glastonbury festival comes to a close so does the working day at Ability. The common problem of blockages in gravity systems is now becoming less and less due to the growing upgrade of pressurised systems, however, this, in turn, brings a whole new set of problems at times when converting an existing dated heating system over from gravity to pressurised.

How to deal with a blocked cold feed

Issues with hydrogen in radiators and corrosion debris should be tackled using a chemical cleaning. Before proceeding with a system clean, check that the feed and expansion cistern is clean and free from bacteriological or microbiological contaminations. If necessary, isolate, drain, clean and disinfect it.

You should select the appropriate cleaning chemical for the system and the issue in question – in this instance, Sentinel X400 System Restorer and X800 JetFlo Ultimate Cleaner are recommended – and commence cleaning, using a power flushing device where possible, but only if it is appropriate for the system. Powerflushing is not suitable for systems which contain microbore or non-barrier plastic piping. If the system is new or less than six months old, X300 System Cleaner is the recommended cleaning product and a manual flush is the recommended cleaning method for this product.

A trusted price?

It was only when we read this article about British Gas a few years ago we became aware of their seemingly profit driven business ethic and money motivated push to get only more profit from the venerable and elderly.

“My 83-year-old mother had a problem with her boiler in April last year. I was away, so she sought help from her brother. When I returned, the deal with British Gas was done — a replacement boiler with wiring and pipework at a cost approaching £7,000. I was astonished, as accredited installers in our area charge £2,000 to £3,000 for a replacement boiler.”

Its a good time of year to have a boiler installed ready for those autumn and winter months ahead. Most of our servicing is also carried out this time of year as we also offer a summer discount to our customers. If you would like a free quotation on your boiler replacement or installation or would like to discuss the options of a central heating system upgrade, then please give us a call on
0800 889015.

How much is a new combination Boiler?

The cost of boiler installation can vary significantly depending on how much work is required, the parts, where you live and who you get to do the job.

You can expect to pay from £1500 for a straightforward replacement of a combi boiler in the same position as the old one up to £2,500 to install a new combi system in a new location, these are approximate figures and only a guide by Ability Plumbing and Heating Contractors.

However, we also warn you may also need to set aside money for a chemical flush (£400) or mechanical flush of your heating system (£710) and also moving pipes (£200-£300) on certain jobs.

These prices don’t include the cost of the boiler discussed above, so as you can see the installation can cost more than the boiler itself.

Combined the figures suggest cost of a new boiler and installation can set you back from £2,440 to £5,250 again these are only guides and to remain competitive we suggest you obtain a quotation for you individual circumstances.

Quotations-Sunday Sun and Hever Fun-lpg boiler upgrade

A day of rest? No such luck. Quotations day. Mixing business and pleasure? Well it’s not advised however today at Ability it was a case of utilizing this beautiful weather, getting some exercise and attending a customers property in Hever to carry out a survey and provide a couple of quotations.

So Daniel being a keen cyclist decided to get up at the crack of dawn get on his road bike and cycle out to meet Mrs. Delaway in Hever. After a nice cup of coffee and chat about the summer sunshine it was down to the fine details of her new LPG boiler installation and central heating system upgrade.

The boiler change its self is relatively straight forward however where upgrading a central heating system there are many more factors to take into consideration for the comfort and ease of the customer and the efficiency and performance, considering the impact on the environment, as well as the cost.

So the quotation is drawn up and various controls, thermostats and programmers have to be discussed and factored into the final quotation and this keeps us competitive and though throughout.

Here is a little information on the lpg.

Liquefied petroleum gas or liquid petroleum gas (LPG or LP gas), also referred to as simply propane or butane, are flammable mixtures of hydrocarbon gases used as fuel in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles.

It is increasingly used as an aerosol propellant[1] and a refrigerant,[2] replacing chlorofluorocarbons in an effort to reduce damage to the ozone layer. When specifically used as a vehicle fuel it is often referred to as autogas.

Varieties of LPG bought and sold include mixes that are mostly propane (C
8), mostly butane (C
10) and, most commonly, mixes including both propane and butane. In the northern hemisphere winter, the mixes contain more propane, while in summer, they contain more butane.[3][4] In the United States, mainly two grades of LPG are sold: commercial propane and HD-5. These specifications are published by the Gas Processors Association (GPA)[5] and the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM).[6] Propane/butane blends are also listed in these specifications.

Ideal weather with Ideal Boilers today in Tunbridge Wells

What a scorcher! Ideal for that Barbecue, Ideal for that outdoor Swimming pool and so its an Ideal boilers day today. We at Ability have a scorcher of a day at work too. With a boiler installation for Max in Crowborough TN6 and various calls for Terry in TN5 and Tunbridge Wells TN4 two of our Senior Gas Engineers are keeping busy on the cusp of Kent and East Sussex.

Call out Manager Tom has 2 Boiler Services in East Grinstead RH19 this morning and so that’s the West Sussex area Covered on this bright and beautiful morning. Tom, our Boiler breakdown Specialist then has two gas safety inspections in RH7 to and and issue them both with CP12 Landlord gas safety Certificates, then hes on to Maidstone ME14 that’s not to mention various quotes he has to do too.

Matthew has a full day of quotations, finishing large installations and the clearing up of loose ends and Daniel is pricing a gas fire installation in Penshurst TN11 this afternoon not before a call in TN6 this morning for a boiler service, a cylinder to look at in  Tonbridge TN12

So that’s a real mixture of Plumbing and Heating work in Kent Sussex and Surrey today a good part of the South East of England.

On the note above of Ideal Boilers here’s a little history on Them.

A History of Ideal Boilers

1920s TO MID 1930s ‘O SERIES’ Open Fire Domestic Boiler.

ideal boilers,open flue,old boiler
Ideal Boilers 1920’s Cast O series open flue

One of the first British designs was the Ideal Cookanheat. This was a revolutionary designed, freestanding stove that combined an open fire, central heating boiler, cooking oven and hot cupboard all in one unit. The Ideal Cookanheat did more to introduce central heating into lower cost homes than any other similar appliance.

This model was another early boiler whose main purpose was to provide enough hot water supply for the homeowner. Interestingly, later versions provided a choice of matte colour: grey, green or brown. An additional extra was to have a cream enamelled front platework, with top plate, smokehood and baseplate enameled black – although this represented an extra cost. It is clear that in the 1920s, Ideal Boilers was already giving customers choice

Powerflush Friday is for system cleaning with powerflushing needs shown below

As the week pulls to a close we have had the busiest in the month of May and it doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon with a one powerflush complete and another powerflush to be booked in. We have been out and unblocked a system in Tunbridge Wells yesterday and we have another powerflush to do. An example below of why your system requires flushing is demonstrated in a photo. We come across this all to often.

If sludge and debris is not removed from heating systems, it can accumulate in radiators, pipework and heat exchangers, causing severe blockages. This diminishes the transfer of heat and can result in pipe, radiator valve and heating control servo valve damage. In some cases this will eventually lead to the premature failure of the boiler.

Powerflushing is a popular method of cleaning and maintaining a central heating system. A powerflushing unit sends water at high velocity through the system to dislodge and remove debris, limescale, and sludge build-up. A thorough powerflush will improve heat distribution throughout the property, subsequently lowering household energy bills and increasing system reliability.

An initial check of the house should be completed, in addition to consulting with the homeowner. Potential highly sludged areas should be identified, i.e. cold radiators, as well as areas which are highly corroded. When highly corroded components are observed, the homeowner should be made aware that cleaning may expose leaks in the most corroded areas.
