Powerflushing The Benefits To Your System

Ability provides heating, plumbing and electrical assistance in West Kent, East, and West Sussex. Powerflushing is a popular method of cleaning and maintaining a central heating system. A Kamco machine is used to send high pressured water through the system to dislodge and remove debris, limescale and sludge build-up.

Over time sludge and debris build up in the central heating system and tend to gather in radiators, pipework and heat exchangers. This sludge is a mixture of dust, dirt, and rust in the water. When debris is left radiators can become cold, valves can become damaged and if left untreated could result in a boiler breakdown.

Powerflushing will allow the debris to be removed and heat dispensed evenly throughout the system. Household bills will be reduced due to the increased efficiency of the central heating system. Also by keeping the system clean the lifespan of the boiler will hopefully be increased. However, homeowners should be made aware that once highly corroded areas have been treated this can sometimes result in leaks on the system that will need to be repaired.

Powerflushing machine

After the first stage of the powerflushing has been completed a high-quality inhibitor should be pumped through the system. This will remove any existing iron oxide or calcium deposits that could be left in the system. After around 10-15 minutes a test should be carried out to make sure all deposits have been removed. If, not the process should be repeated.

Many boiler manufacturers now make the warranty dependant on keeping the system clean in line with the Compliance Guide to Part L of the UK Building Regulations

Should you feel your central heating system would benefit from powerflushing call Ability on 01892 514495 or email info@ability.uk.com for a free no-obligation quotation. Our engineers will be happy to do an assessment and identify any high sludged and corroded areas within the central heating system.

A mum recently went viral after sharing a simple trick for keeping her toilet clean and smelling fresh, but experts are warning against it

If you love keeping up with all the latest cleaning tips and tricks, you might recently have seen one doing the rounds involving toilets.

A mum went viral on Facebook after sharing her “little secret” for making her toilet look fresh and smell clean every time someone flushed it.

The woman explained in the group, Mums Who Clean, that she’d been using this trick for the last 14 years.

She wrote: “[Put] Dishwashing liquid in the toilet tank compartment and every flush is fresh clean smelly bubbles and toilet always looks clean.”

Many people thought it was a great idea and vowed to try it for themselves, while others weren’t so sure about it.

If you were wondering whether or not to give it a go, it seems an expert now has the answer for you.

Daniel our plumber explained why you shouldn’t try it at home

We have advised people against using products that were not designed for use in a toilet system.

He said: “Ability plumbers advise that it’s safest to use cleaning products specifically designed for flush toilets. People living outside built-up areas who use septic tanks should ensure the product used is compatible with septic systems.”

He added that customers should always think about the environment when choosing cleaning products.

If you’re now looking for a more eco-friendly way to make your toilet crystal clean, you might want to consider using a pumice stone.

A woman recently posted in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group to say she’d purchased a pumice stone from her local pharmacy and used it to remove grime from the toilet bowl.

She explained: “Since moving into my new house a year and half ago the toilets in the house have always annoyed me.

“I’m guessing the people before didn’t clean the toilets much! I had tried everything, scrubbing, bleach. So for months, I’ve had those loo things that coloured the water, but I could still see it.

Safety Checks Commonly Identify An Electrical Fault

Ability provides electrical, heating and plumbing assistance in the Kent, East and West Sussex Areas and prides ourselves on providing a good quality of service. We are finding increasingly that customers have electrical faults on appliances within their homes and are unaware of the dangers if these are not addressed.

Electrical Assistance

Nationwide gas engineers have found over 25,000 unsafe electrical faults during their calls. With the increasing number of electrical products that are used, homeowners need to look out for signs of wear and tear to ensure their homes remain safe. It has been stated that every household has at least one faulty electrical appliance or gadget within their home and alarmingly many would continue to use it.

Some of the common causes of electrical faults are poor wiring or defective electrical wires, cracked insulation, overheated wiring and damaged electrical appliances.

Extension cords should not be used as a permanent substitute for an additional power socket and power points should not be situated near a water source.

Although, when asked homeowners are actively worried about electrical safety within their homes many of these faults found had previously been undetected. These electrical faults were found by engineers when carrying out gas safety checks and electrical inspections however there are a huge amount of homeowners that would not think to have one of these carried out meaning faults could remain undetected.

One way of detecting an electrical fault is by using a smart meter, it will identify any changes in energy usage in the household. Faulty appliances commonly turn on and off or use more electricity than usual.

If you think you may have an electrical fault or would like gas or electrical inspection carried out please call Ability on 01892 514495 or email info@ability.uk.com and we would be more than happy to help.

Riello Gas and Oil Burners And Their Functions

Ability provides heating, plumbing and electrical assistance in Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, East Grinstead, Crowborough, Heathfield, Paddock Wood, and surrounding areas. Riello burners are comprehensive products that we have used on many occasions.

Boiler burners are the functional component of boilers that provide heat by combustion of fossil fuels via a heat exchanger.

Riello Oil burner

An oil burner pumps oil at high pressure from a holding tank through a fuel line. Hot gases travel through the boiler in metal tubes heating them in the process.

A gas burner is a hollow metal disk with holes punctured through its perimeters. The burner produces a controlled flame by mixing gas with an oxidizer which allows ignition and combustion within the boiler.

Boilers should be serviced annually carbon builds up on the burner and over time if not cleaned the damage will become unrepairable and a replacement burner will be needed

Riello was formed in Italy in 1920 they were the first company to adapt domestic light oil burners for use in bakers ovens. They manufacture gas, oil and dual fuel burners for both residential and commercial use from 10kw to 30kw.

Burner

Riello is durable, lightweight and compact. They have an integrated electronic control box with interrupted ignition. The burners have an automatic air shutter that eliminates heat loss to provide enhanced efficiency.

One of the advantages of a Riello burner is that it has a selector burner tool that matches the individual boiler requirements. They offer very good aftercare and technical support. They are members of the government Investors In People Scheme. Investment in training and development means technicians are experts in their field and technological innovation is second to none.

CO Emissions Increased By Heating Throughout the Winter

Ability provides heating, plumbing and electrical assistance throughout Kent and East and West Sussex, some of the areas include Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Crowborough, East Grinstead, Paddock Wood, and all surrounding areas. We care about keeping CO emissions low.

During the colder weather many of us turn up the heating but how many of us actually think about the effect it has? It is estimated that 37% of the UK CO emissions come from heating our homes. +central heating boilers are contributing highly to bringing the UK above their clean air goals in large towns and cities they are one of the main sources of nitrogen dioxide emissions as well as cars.

Heat accounts for more than a third of our current carbon emissions.  Innovative technology is needed to reduce this figure to assist with climate change. The government has pledged that by 2050 they will reduce emissions by 80%. In order for this target to be achievable changes needs to be implemented within every household. For example, if every household turned their thermostat to 19 degrees rather than 20 degrees this would significantly have a positive impact on the CO emissions.

Other measures that can be implemented to help with the CO emissions include, smart radiator thermostats, smart heating solutions, replacing old existing boilers, and fully insulating the home.

Slightly reduce the heat in our homes

The Government are encouraging those living off the grid to consider the environmental impact of their fuel choice, by using Bio LPG as opposed to oil the households carbon footprint could be reduced by 38%

Energy companies need to invest in raising awareness of how customers can save money by driving down their energy bills and taking small solutions to help the UK meet the CO emission targets in 2050.

If you require a free quotation for a replacement boiler, smart heating solutions or smart radiator thermostats please call Ability on 01892 514495 or email info@ability.co.uk

Climate Change UK Targets Threatened By Home Gas Boilers

To combat climate change the government has pledged that by 2050 they will reduce emissions by 80%.  However, with the majority of our homes still fuelled by gas and oil this is significantly reducing the probability of the UK meeting these targets.

plumbing-heating electrical
Central Heating Home

New regulation are coming in to force in 2025 to help with climate change, meaning that all new homes, will have to use green gas or alternative, to heat water and their homes, money needs to be invested into new products.  Currently, 14% of UK greenhouse gases come from our homes and although all new homes built in 2025 will use greener energy it is just a drop in the ocean as the vast majority of UK homes will not.

20,000 homes a week need to convert to low carbon energy source by 2050 for the UK to meet the climate change targets.  Gas central heating boilers are contributing highly to bringing the UK above their clean air goals in large towns and cities they are one of the main sources of nitrogen dioxide emissions as well as cars.

What Needs To Be Done To Combat Climate Change

Biogas reduces carbon emissions by 90% and could be used to fuel up to two million off-grid homes as well as businesses such as mobile caterers throughout the UK to help with climate change.  Smart control systems, when used to their full potential, will also reduce the amount of energy each household uses.

Money needs to be invested for home insulation schemes as currently these costs are having to be met by homeowners and they do not always have the money to invest to facilitate these changes.  Heat accounts for more than a third of our current carbon emissions.  Innovative technology is needed to reduce this figure to assist with climate change.

Find The Right Boiler For Your Home

Ability provides heating, plumbing and electrical assistance throughout the South East of England. Purchasing the right boiler is quite an investment and when considering to upgrade it is important that you find the best one that works for you.

Right boiler System Boilers

System boilers directly heat the central heating system taking water from the mains and heating it through a storage cylinder. They could be the right boiler for you if you have a property with two or more bathrooms and showers. System boilers deliver great water flow even if the water is being run from more than one place at a time.

System boilers do require a tank so if you think this is the right boiler for you there must be space within the house to accommodate it. If your property has poor incoming water pressure then a System boiler will not rectify this and a pump or mains boost tanks may also need to be installed.

Combi Boiler

Combi boilers are a compact unit that provides both heating and hot water. It may be the right boiler for you if your home lacks space to house a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. The combi works by heating water straight from the mains when a hot water tap is turned on.

Combi boilers may not be the right boiler for you if you have poor incoming water pressure. Unlike with other systems, you will no longer have a separate immersion heater to provide hot water as back up if your combi does go wrong.

Back Boiler

Back boilers were traditionally placed within the chimney of a property and would have a gas fire attached to the front of it. It provides heating and hot water throughout the property.

Although back boilers are still being used they are being frequently replaced with combi boilers. Back boilers are more expensive to run and let off more toxins than the combi boiler and this should be considered when deciding if the Back boiler is the right boiler for you.

If you would like a free no-obligation quotation or a service on your boiler whether it be gas, oil or lpg please give Ability a call on 01892 514495 or email info@ability.uk.com

Gas Safe Check When Looking For A Registered Engineer

Looking for an engineer to undertake gas work? It’s tempting to pick the first name on the list – but you might want to investigate further before you do.

Gas Safe registration is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out gas work, but there are many different types of gas work a business may offer. All engineers need to hold a ‘core’ element to their qualifications – once they have this they can then add in any additional types of work they wish to offer.

For more information on the different categories that engineers will hold to carry out work on certain appliances and a glossary of terms commonly used to refer to gas work, you can consult Gas Safe who are the best to be your guide.

Not sure about the qualifications or right company for you? Domestic work categories Commercial work categories

If you’re unsure what would be classified as domestic and commercial work then Gas Safe gives the definitions below, that may help…

Gas Safe Domestic

Relates to those gas appliances that are designed for use in a domestic property, as well as gas pipework up to 35mm in diameter, again in a domestic property.

Note: There may be instances in larger domestic properties where non-domestic appliances and larger pipework maybe required. In these cases, appropriate non-domestic work categories may be necessary.

Gas Safe Commercial

In the context of work categories and competence, this refers to the size of pipework, appliance type/gas consumption in addition to the property type. However, the property type is not the sole criteria. For example, a ‘domestic’ gas boiler installed in a church may in certain circumstances still be considered a ‘domestic’ appliance regardless of being installed in a ‘non- domestic’ property.

Often appropriate competence can only be determined on a case by case basis. If in doubt, contact us to check.

Here at Ability, we hold qualifications in both Domestic and Commercial. Commercial catering as well as mobile catering. We hold certification in LPG and have many years of experience as well as a vast knowledge of the industry. So don’t hesitate to call when it’s gas safety you need.

Combi boilers Manufactured By Worcester Bosch

Combi boilers are the most popular type of boiler in the UK and as Ability is a Gold accredited installer for Worcester Bosch we thought we would share information about them.

Worcester Bosch combi boilers are compatible with all fuel types (gas, oil and lpg) and come with up to a 10-year guarantee. They are smaller in size and more economical than other boiler types

A combi (or combination) boiler is an ingenious space-saving idea, and an increasingly popular choice in UK homes. In fact, combis now account for well over half of all the new domestic boilers installed in Britain every year.

Worcester Bosch offers a full range of Combi Boilers to suit your needs. All of their Greenstar gas and oil boilers have been awarded Which? Best Buy status and come with a 10 year guarantee.

Deciding which boiler will make an efficient and practical fit with your home and lifestyle can be confusing.

If your new boiler is going to be fitted onto your existing system, please consider the cleanliness of your existing pipework and radiators as this could cause damage to your new combi boiler. For more information about system cleanliness, you can view the Worcester Bosch website here.

A combination or ‘combi’ boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you won’t need a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank in the roof space.

They are also very cost-effective and energy-efficient as water is heated instantly rather than being heated and then stored in a cylinder. An added benefit is that hot water is delivered at mains pressure, which means that you could get a powerful shower without the need for a separate pump.
