Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers
Can I change a wall socket myself?
This isn’t advisable unless you know what you are doing. A professional Electrician will keep you safe and cost you less in the long run. You could cause yourself and your property serious harm.
What are magnetic filters?
A magnetic filter is device that helps collect the sludge that can build up in a central heating system.
Much of the sludge is made up of rust particles that have corroded and come away from inside pipes or radiators. A magnetic filter is made up of a large magnet that attracts these particles, and then filters them out of the system. This helps prevent blockages and keeps the water flowing through the central heating system.
The idea behind these devices is that corrosion within a sealed wet central heating system produces sludge. This which can block up boiler heat exchangers, pumps and radiators and that because this sludge is ferrous in nature (that is, it results from iron or steel corrosion), it can be trapped by a powerful magnet.
This theory is partially true. But sludge can also result from the corrosion of copper, zinc or aluminium components. This is nonferrous, and will not be caught by a magnet.
Ideally, your central heating system should not contain any sludge anyway, because it should be dosed with the corrosion inhibitor. However over time, this inhibitor becomes diluted and if your system is drained, has a leak or losses pressure at times then this inhibitor can become less effective. So here at Ability, we strongly advise a magnetic filter along with the manufacturers.
Is having a smart meter fitted a smart move?
Smart meters allow you to monitor your energy usage in real-time and help you find ways to cut it. Many people have used smart meters to reduce fuel waste. You should also wait until your dishwasher and washing machine are full before you use them. Try to use the most energy-efficient settings.
Can adding inhibitor help prevent blockages?
Another method of preventing sludge build-up is adding corrosion inhibitor fluid to the central heating system. Maintaining the correct dose of inhibitor is an important part of caring for your boiler and some manufacturers require evidence of this to keep any warranty valid.
What is Carbon Offsetting?
Carbon offsetting is about funding projects around the world that help reduce carbon emissions by a measurable and verifiable amount. Without the extra “carbon finance” from people or organisations offsetting their emissions, these projects would not have happened.
Can replacing old bulbs save me money?
By using energy-saving bulbs instead of old-fashioned ones, you can save up to £180 per bulb. LED bulbs use around 90% less energy than traditional ones. If you’re already using energy-saving bulbs, turn the lights off when they’re not in use.
