New warnings over unsafe alarms

New warnings are being issued about unsafe heat, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms ahead of new legislation being introduced in Scotland. The warnings have been made by trade association SELECT and SCOTTS (the Society of Chief Officers of Trading Standards in Scotland. Much of their advice is relevant to households across the UK.

Deadline moving closer

The organisations are reminding installers, businesses and individuals that all alarms fitted under the very latest legislation needed to comply with all relevant product standards. The deadline for compliance with new guidance in Scotland is set for February 2022. The guidelines say a competent person always needs to be used to carry out necessary installation work. Competent people can include professional electricians.

Compliance is essential

Chair of SCOTSS Greame Paton said it was important that his organisation got the message across “that all new and existing systems have to be wholly compliant”. He is urging householders to only used local firms that have Trading Standards approval and/or genuine SELECT members. Homeowners need to ensure all alarms feature the following information: name and address of manufacturer, batch code/date of manufacture, model number, model type and the standard number for the kind of alarm installed.

Key alarm markings

Heat detectors need to be marked as compliant with BS EN 5446-32. Smoke alarms and multi-sensor alarms must be compliant with BS EN 14604. CO alarms should be marked as compliant with BS EN 50291-1. A multi-sensor alarm can also be identified as being compliant with BS EN 54-29. Anyone based in Scotland that is concerned about non-compliant products is urged to contact Advice Direct Scotland. Their telephone number is 0808 164 6000. All relevant information will be sent to local trading standards.
