Ofgem plans for a cheaper, greener, more secure energy system.

Households throughout Britain continue to face a challenging period as they grapple with the burden of soaring energy prices driven by global market forces.

In the immediate and near future, Ofgems collaborative efforts with the government, industry, and consumer organisations are dedicated to safeguarding the most vulnerable customers. However, they are equally committed to keeping their focus on the long-term outlook.

The government has set forth ambitious goals for renewable energy. Ofgem’s responsibility lies in establishing robust systems that ensure the availability of affordable, environmentally friendly, domestically sourced energy for both homes and businesses, all while minimising costs for consumers.

Without undergoing significant reforms, the electricity system, markets, and grid will hinder rather than facilitate the transition to a net-zero future. It is of utmost importance and urgency that the planning and coordination of generation and network capacity are executed meticulously to secure the necessary investments for achieving net-zero targets by 2035 (a clean power system with net-zero emissions) and 2050 (a net-zero economy). Additionally, this will enable the development of a truly intelligent and flexible energy system.

To facilitate this transition, Ofgem is committing billions of pounds to reduce our heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels and establish a domestic energy system that is cleaner, more affordable, and highly secure. By doing so, they will not only safeguard the stability of their energy supply but also significantly reduce their susceptibility to unpredictable international energy prices.

To achieve this ambitious transformation, Ofgem must rapidly and systematically overhaul their energy systems and markets. This entails an unprecedented pace of change in both their physical and digital energy infrastructure, unlike anything witnessed in decades.

Today, Ofgem is initiating consultations on a range of proposals aimed at transforming various aspects of the energy sector. These proposals cover topics such as the planning, siting, and management of distribution networks, as well as opportunities for consumers to generate income by adopting more flexible energy usage practices.

Cleaner, Sustainable energy

As the country progresses towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, local engagement and participation will play an increasingly vital role in grid balancing. The shift towards greener transportation and heating methods will occur on a localised scale, with changes unfolding street by street and town by town. This transition will also involve a rise in local power generation.

That’s why Ofgem are actively seeking input from various stakeholders at the local level, including network operators, local planning representatives, councils, town planners, and developers. Ofgem welcome their insights and perspectives on their comprehensive proposals that encompass the planning, trading, and operation of all energy forms.

Ofgem are introducing proposals to establish independent regional system planners that will facilitate the seamless integration of sustainable energy sources into the grid, ensuring efficient delivery to homes and businesses.

The objective is to enhance coordination and accountability, enabling our communities to swiftly and effectively access flexible green energy. As we progressively increase the share of intermittent power generation, such as wind and solar, and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps, which significantly increase electricity demand, the development of a flexible energy system becomes imperative.

Concurrently, they are unveiling an ambitious long-term vision to unlock the potential of flexibility. This entails exploring the creation of a shared digital infrastructure that would unify energy markets, buyers, and sellers in a common marketplace for energy trading.

Innovative solutions

Ultimately, these efforts will transform their energy system into one vastly different from what they presently know. Innovative solutions will empower consumers by providing them with greater control over energy consumption, access to comprehensive data, and regularly updated pricing. By leveraging the smart capabilities of modern consumer goods, individuals can utilise cheap and abundant renewable electricity during peak wind or solar periods and adjust their energy demand when conditions are calm or overcast. This will result in lower bills, reduced strain on the grid, and facilitate the transition to a net-zero future.

Ofgem is closely collaborating with the government to design a market that maximises these benefits while ensuring that vulnerable or low-income customers, who may face challenges in participating, are not disadvantaged.

For many of us, this represents an opportunity to rethink our relationship with energy, encompassing the choices we make when purchasing, selling, and selecting the energy sources for our essential services.

A brighter future for energy consumption

While these proposals may not offer immediate relief to those currently struggling with energy affordability, proactive planning for the future will revolutionise Britain’s energy security and climate change aspirations, leading to cheaper, greener, and more reliable power in the years to come. This task is now both vital and urgent, leaving no room for delay.
