Potential Hive heating problems

Encountering persistent connectivity issues with the Hive Mini has been a source of frustration. Following discussions with Hive, it seems that some house’s setup may be the root cause of the unreliability in the heating system.

Three major issues have surfaced:

  1. Proximity to Electrical Devices: The hub’s closeness to other electrical devices, especially the TV, introduces interference, resulting in frequent disconnections. Unfortunately, moving the hub, located alongside the router, isn’t a feasible solution.
  2. Structural and Layout Challenges: Even when the thermostat operates in stand-alone mode without the hub, maintaining a connection is a struggle. Solid 9-inch brick walls and closed doors enclosing the boiler, positioned in a bathroom cupboard, exacerbate the problem.
  3. DIY Installation Woes: Opting for a DIY installation may have contributed to the challenges. Hive suggests that a professional installer might have tackled these issues more effectively, though they haven’t provided specific insights into what a professional installer could have done differently.

In response to these challenges, Hive has agreed to refund the signal booster’s cost, which was initially recommended but failed to resolve the issues. Additionally, we are exploring the possibility of returning the Hive Mini to the retailer.

In a quest for an alternative, you could reach out to Drayton about their Wiser system. Here’s what could be gathered:

  • The Wiser system lacks a separate hub; the hub and receiver are integrated into the same unit.
  • The unit needs to connect with Wi-Fi.
  • It boasts a 30m range for radio signals, accommodating variations in wall thickness.
  • As the Wi-Fi in that part of the house relies on plug-in Wi-Fi extenders, which use 2.4 GHz, compatibility shouldn’t be an issue.
  • DIY installation is feasible, but choosing one of their approved installers extends the warranty.

Considering the potential of the Drayton Wiser system, we’re seeking real-life experiences, particularly regarding connection reliability. In the house, the router is in the ground front room, while the boiler is about 10 meters away, up a flight of stairs and behind two closed doors. Solid brick walls and a different network via plug-in extenders further complicate the Wi-Fi situation.

We’re open to insights, recommendations, or experiences with the Drayton Wiser system or any alternative systems. It’s worth noting that the previous Drayfoss wireless thermostat, while not a smart system, didn’t encounter any issues.
